Views down to Aschau |
With some trepidation on my part, we caught the bus to Aschau which took about 20 minutes. From Aschau we ascended very steeply to a coll (1829m) which took us about 90 minutes. It was already very hot which made for quite tough going.
We passed some walkers but were mostly enjoying the walk to ourselves and often looking down taking in the height we had climbed as well as the amazing views over to Wilder Kaiser. We stopped temporarily at Kleinmoosalm, a collection of farm buildings with a shrine and a welcome bench for us to rest for five minutes.
Onwards we climbed to reach the coll with Schwarzkogel off to our right (2030m) which we could have taken a detour up but decided not to as the day was going to be long enough.
Refreshments at Pengelstein |
Here the path undulated until we reached Pengelstein (1938m). We stopped here for lunch and a cool drink and then headed off again, past the two lakes, and over to Hahnenkamm (where one of the main Kitzbuhel cable car stations is). This part of the walk took us about an hour and a half and we stopped at the restaurant and enjoyed a cool fruit beer. You can tell by the look of the people who frequent these places that it’s for the rich and famous - apparently Kitzbuhel attracts many celebrities and rich business folk and that’s reflected in the price you pay (6 Euro for a pint which is £5.50).
Suitably refreshed and lighter of pocket, we headed down for the last leg of our journey. The route meandered down forest track, rather steeply in the most part and I skidded a few times. I had to divert my eyes at some points due to the sheer drop to my left!
Enormous pile of snow, covered with insulation to prevent melting during the summer months! |
We arrived back to the Hotel at 5pm having been on our feet for around six hours in total and having walked a total distance of 12 miles - less than what we did on Monday but this felt a bit more punishing (probably because we’ve been exercising constantly since Monday).
